| What I like
to do to cross train for golf are a couple
of workouts for two different reasons. One
is a swim workout to increase strength and
length and the other is middle distant
running to increase endurance.
Freestyle
swimming and breast stroke not only
strengthens key muscle groups for the golf
swing, but it also stretches those muscles
out. Weight lifting increases strength, but
tightens the muscles which we all know is
not good for golf! My workouts usually
average about a 1/2 mile swim two times a
week during the season and a mile swim three
times a week on the off-season. I would
definitely recommend swimming for golfers
because you will be amazed at how much
distance you gain from it! As for running, I
do that more frequently to increase stamina
for tournaments. When you walk a round of
golf, you are walking any where from 4 1/2
miles to 5 miles. Those golfers who have the
best endurance don't have to worry about
fatigue playing a part in their game on the
final day of competition. If physical
fatigue sets in too early in the game, it
doesn't matter how much skill you have, your
game is going to suffer. I normally run 3 to
5 miles four times a week in the season and
in the off-season I run about six times a
week.
